About The Hedgecocks of Warrington
Why “The Hedgecocks of Warrington” ?
The title of the website may now seem inappropriate as we know that the family did not originate in the old market town of Warrington which lies on the north bank of the river Mersey in what at that time was the County Palatine of Lancaster. However within this family the name Hedgecock did originate in the town.
The brothers, Richard and Peter Hitchcock, were born to John Hitchcock and his wife, Elizabeth Wilson in the ancient city of Chester, founded by the Romans who gave it the name Deva. There were other children of John and Elizabeth but it was Richard and Peter who moved to Warrington and raised families there between the 1770s and early 1800s and by 1820 the names of all their descendants had metamorphosed to Hedgecock (with or without the middle “e”), and it is these descendants who later in the 19th. and early 20th. centuries migrated first to the nearby cities of Salford, Manchester and Liverpool and towns of St Helens, Widnes and Runcorn and then further afield to the United States, Canada, Australia and South Africa.
The aim of the site is to trace and celebrate the history of these descendants down to modern times.
